Less is known about the 7th Tennessee, short of their horrendous casualties suffered between 1861 and 1865. At Gettysburg alone, the unit lost 116 men (24 killed, 38 wounded and 54 missing) of 249 engaged in the fight, their casualty rate being 46.58%. By 1865, just months before Lee's Surrender, the unit was reported to have "not more than 60 men remaining," as noted by a deserter. At the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse in April of 1865, the 7th Tennessee surrendered just 6 officers and 41 men enlisted under Lt. Colonel Samuel G. Shepard. It's largely unclear exactly how many men served in the 7th Tennessee, but it is estimated to be anywhere between 1,850 and 1,945.
